About me

Hi

I'mEva Marie

French student and blogger

Welcome to my blog, where I love to write about anything that comes to my mind, with no taboo. I’m 24, I’ve got freckles (you get it now) and I’m a grumpy French, sometimes, who writes in English. I love books, cats, le barbu, pizzas and Dicaprio. Besides that, there is not much that you need to know about me. Except that his blog has seen is first day back in 2017, and I'm proud that I manage to keep it that long.

The power of September

Summer time. Oh, you are always hard to me. Draining my inspiration and motivation to do anything creative. Those long warm days are beautiful, yet feel like I can’t stand them any longer. By the end of August, I already crave for autumn.

Then comes September.

September has been synonymous of stress and anxiety throughout my teenage years. It meant going back to school - a mix of excitement, fear and apprehension. I hated it for a really long time. Then came my gap year, then uni. This is when September changed its meaning to me. It became the time where everything feels fresh and new. My motivation grows up and I’m inspired by anything I like. Words are flowing under my fingers, beauty is everywhere. The mixed emotions are still there, while others came such as haste, happiness or curiosity. I turned what looked like negativity into something I could handle and control. Something positive that no longer brings negativity. You get what you give, right?

This is what I call the power of September, or the new January. It always comes by mid-August, when I’m planning everything before uni starts again. I get excited for new classes, learning new things and meeting new people. This year, I finally start my master degree while working as an apprentice for two years in digital communication. I’m a bit scared that this year will be different due to covid, obviously, but they're not one thing that could take away my motivation and inspiration. That’s the real power of this month. I don’t know if it might change once I’m no longer in the school system, but I enjoy it as much as I can while it lasts.

In other words, I hope that you’ll see more of me here than you did during summer time. I’m already planning my content weeks ahead to be sure that I’ve got the time I need for uni/works/myself and then this blog. I’m not even sure there are that many of you, but if there is, I would love to know how September makes you feel, and what you’re currently doing: working, at school, no plans yet?

Biscuit de Savoie, the recipe

If you have enough of yogurt cake, this one if for you. A very fluffy, but light cake, tasty and super easy. We bought book of grandma’s recipe the other day, and I wanted to try this one for quite some time now. I like elaborate cake, but sometimes I want something quick and easy. However, if you’re not a big fan of eggs, I would not recommend this one for you, or just use something else instead with four eggs.

What you’ll need:

150 g of sugar

4 to 6 eggs

100 g of flour

40 g starch

1 sachet of vanilla sugar

1 pinch of salt

The recipe

  1. In a bowl, beat the sugars with the egg yolks until it’s smooth.
  2. Beat the egg whites until stiff with the salt. Add this to your sugar mixing with the flour and starch very lightly. Use a spoon to not break the egg whites. The mix should be consistent.
  3. Pour the mixing into a baking tin (use butter and flower for your tin) and put it in the oven for 40 minutes at 170°C. Wait until it cools before eating.

Here it is, quick and easy! You can change the recipe to your liking if you feel experimental. Oh and yes, you might have spotted an another fluffy things trying to have his piece of it!

Life lately

Well, I'm writing again people! It took me a while to come back to this blog. I left it totally uninspired for the summer season. And frankly, I wanted some time off to focus on other things happening in my life. But the end of summer will shortly arrive (and hopefully the heatwave will go as well...), and my inspiration comes back. How typical? The whole "back to school" things is always making me exited and inspired. The season changing, autumn on its way, new books to read and lots to talk about.

But before that, I'm still focusing on the present moment. I started a new job as an apprentice and I like it. It's stimulating and I don't have time to be bored, even if it's quite different as a beginning as I work from home. I've only spent one day in the actual workplace, and as they are super strict, they won't allow people to go back to work anytime soon. But that's okay for now. I'll have two more weeks of holidays before uni starts again. I'll finally start my master degree in September and I'm very excited to begin. It's everything I want and more, it gives me hope and possibilities for the futur.

We also went on holidays a few weeks back. Hopefully, I'll write about that very soon and might even come up with a video - will see about that! It was very much needed, relaxing with lots of discoveries, biking and beaches.

As for the reading part, I'm currently reading the new Twilight book - Midnight Sun. I always loved the movies, and I actually don't remember much about the books. It's been a while so I'm planning on reading them all after I finish this one. And for the moment, it's quite good even if I found so many things that aren't right! Tell me what are your thoughts about it if you've read it already or planning to.

Oh, and finally, I turned 24! Time flies - look at me speaking like an old woman!

See you very soon...

Paris, one year

A chaotic and stressful move, the heatwave and an almost broken rented van. The Sacré Cœur, Eiffel Tower and Panthéon. Walking along the Canal St Martin or La Villette. Finding new friends and seeing older ones. Léo, early mornings and lots of tea. Grumpy faces in the metro, late trains and strikes. Lots of walking along the Seine, sight seeing and touristic visits. The stairs of Montmartre, late summer pictures and love. Lots of love.

Today, I took the tube and I got out of the metro at Opéra. I went out, and the Opéra Garnier was just sitting there, right in front of me. I’ve seen it plenty of times now, but I was still amazed. Me, I was standing in the middle of Paris. I city I now call “home”. I still smile and have those big bright eyes whenever I see something as majestic as this. The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Sacré Cœur. It’s magic. Today has been one year since I live in Paris, since I’m part of those grumpy French. It’s been a year since I live in this beautiful city and can now call it home. It feels right, I am exactly where I need to be, with whom I want to be.

But bloody hell, I miss fresh air!

Is it easier to talk online than to a friend?

For those of you who share a lot of your life and personality online, whether it's with a blog or on social medias, have you ever thought that it was easier to just write things online than talking to an actual friend? That saying something personal to strangers could feel easier than having a conversation with someone you trust and love? How crazy, right? But somehow, sometimes, it does feel easier.

A good friend pointed this out to me one day, and it made me think about it quite a lot. Writing things, whether it’s in a journal or on my blog feels natural to me. Talking to someone about what’s really going on inside my head, not so much. And yet, I know I can count on my friend and I like when they are open and honest with me, that they can trust me. So why is it so hard for me to do the same?

I remember the time when someone said that I was reserved with my feelings and even with myself. I was hurt because I did not understand the whole meaning of this, but now I do. And it's still true. I think it’s just that I don’t like to annoy people with what’s inside my head, at least not when it’s negative. I'm more of a listener myself and being the person who nods feels natural, not the other way around. Therefore, it can be quite hard to open myself up to strangers or new friends. It takes a lot of time, and I usually don't open as much as I should. Yet, I still don't really get how my mind works and why it's easier for me to share on my blog than reaching out. Of course, I know I can count on people and that I won't be boring to them and that they would listen and support me in their own way. Yet, I keep myself inside this shell. As if I want to take care of everything by myself.

Well, not anymore. Being in a relationship, you have to force yourself to have these conversations. You can't just go and cry alone whenever something's wrong. It takes time, but eventually I open up quite easily with my boyfriend. He is my biggest support and I live with him. Obviously, I'm comfortable enough to be totally open. And anyway, he just knows when something is off with me. So I'm getting used to that, and now I try to do the same with my friend. And it's bloody hard people. Yet, when you see the value when you talk to a friend, the love and support you receive, it becomes easier to keep doing it. It’s something to get used to I guess. However, it takes time and writing your feelings on the internet can still feels easier. And I think it’s okay.

The thing is, people have to try to find a way to share their feelings, to express them in any way that make them comfortable. For me, it has always been through writing and expressing myself with words. Writing is some sort of security, honesty and a way to let go. The most important thing is knowing you have people who's got your back, no matter how easy or hard it is to talk to them, they're here as much as you are here for them. Nobody is alone, but you've got to give yourself some time to adjust to whatever you're comfortable with.

Life lately

More chilled out content is actually good sometimes, especially during this really strange period. Today, France is going to start ending the quarantine. I don’t really know how to feel about this. I really want to go out and enjoy Paris while it’s sunny and beautiful, and yet I’m bloody scared to go out and breathe. How crazy is that? But I know we all feel the same in a way, all scared of something we do not know. And yet, it’s been weeks since we had to get used to this new life. The whole world had to get used to that. It’s even crazier and yet, a bit comforting.

How are you all doing? I hope I found you safe and well. At the moment, I’m drowned between all the exams (at home) I have to do, my internship and all of my applications for a master degree. It’s crazy how I get stress by that every year, even if I’m prepared for it. I just hate it, it scares me and stresses me out like anything else. And when I’m too stressed, I play Sims 4, so that’s that. But I actually found out that I’ve got a positive response for one of my application and I’m so happy about it because it was in my first choices.

Anyway, what will you do when you’ll first get out of the house? Mine will probably go to the nearest park and just walk around nature (if it opens one day…). I miss walking in the city so much (my body misses it as well!), and I can’t wait to do it again. Oh, and go and see my parents in the countryside. It’s probably the first time I missed the country side (Don’t get me wrong, I love nature, but where I grew up is a really boring city where you can’t do anything). Basically, I just want to get out of the house and see something else than my balcony and white walls. But I’m curious to know what you miss the most during quarantine? How is it where you live? Can you go out again or not yet?

How books nourish my soul

Have you ever had this feeling when reading a book and you’re craving to finish it, only to start another one? Again, and again. As if books were nourishing yourself as you read them. Sounds crazy, right? Well, not that much for books lover I guess.

The more I read, the harder it is to stop. It’s more than a past-time, it’s a need. I’m always thinking of a new book, or the one I’m reading and planning on finishing as soon as possible. It’s an ever-ending list of books to read and yet, in my craving to start another one, it’s a hope to read them all. Oh boy, I wish it could be possible to read all the books in the world.

It might be silly for someone whose passion are not books. And if it’s not, think of something else. Think of something that, when doing it, you are the most yourself, happy, at peace. When you do it, it just sounds right, like it’s your thing. Now you get it? Well, I hope you do. I hope everyone could understand the power of books and words making so many amazing stories and characters. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys reading, but I surely hope that most people have something really special to them, as books are for me. In that way, you can understand what I’m talking about.

I used to invent stories before knowing how to read. As a teenager, I tried to write a million stories and beginnings of novels. I've always have stories in my life. It’s not as if my life was terrible and I needed to escape. I just like the feeling of traveling in your mind in somewhere else. It doesn’t have to be better than your life, you only just need to escape for the time you’re reading. That’s the power of books, you can just fly away and never come back as you were before. I firmly believe that every book brings something, even if it’s bad, even if you disliked it. It has made your feel something, it has captured your mind and imagination, made you think. And again, it’s a power books have. They procure you so many feelings, thoughts and ways of thinking. With books, you just feel.

The more I read, the more I love books. The more I read, the more I feel intelligent, opinionated and cultivated. The more I read and the more I fall in love with words, stories, sentences and magic behind them all. Now please tell me what is YOUR thing. What brings you that spark inside of you?

What did I read this month? #5

2020 will be the year of great books! This is what I hoped for at the beginning of the month, and I can say that I found some really good one this month. I was inspired by some people on instagram saying that they wanted to read a bit less but reading books they wanted to, or longer books. I have been putting off some really big books I want to read because I knew it would take me a while to read them. But I know I’m missing something by not reading them. Next month’s list while probably be a bit shorter then, but let’s just hope I find some other good big books!

Tu comprendras quand tu seras plus grande by V. Grimaldi

I wanted to read more French books this month, especially by Virginie Grimaldi (she is quite famous in France). And I just loved what she writes. It was beautiful, simple, inspiring, lovely, all the good stuff. I love how she writes about simple people being so human, caring for others. She shows us that life can be simple and beautiful, no matter what, no matter what you’ve been through.

Also read this month and loved: Le premier jour du reste de ma vie and Il est grand temps de rallumer les étoiles

Such a fun age by K. Reid

This was such a strange and interesting book about « modern racism ». I liked the way we both had Emira and her boss thoughts and see how crazy Alix’s mind works. It was terrifying and sad. I thought that Emira was not an interesting character though, she was quite boring. But I guess that’s what is interesting, that Emira is so normal while being in a weird and toxic situation between her boyfriend and her boss. I wanted more concerning Emira and the kids she takes care, but I guess it was not really the point of the book.

The bookish life of Nina Hill by A. Waxman

*SPOILER* Well, this book was a winner for me. I recognized so much of me through different characters, and the love of books by so many of them changed it all. Thank god, books like that exist! I loved the character of Nina, and especially how happy she is in her life, as simply as it is. She just enjoys being her, while struggling with life at the same time with anxiety (nice try to talk about it, but I wanted more of that part). Then one day, people came into her life and everything changes while triggering her organized life. I was not particularly a fan of the romance in the book, it was not what I was looking for. Well, I just wanted to read about a girl who enjoyed books as much as I do. But I was surprised to see much more in it, especially the new family part of it. The book shows that family are messy even if everything turns out pretty good and easy for her in the end. I also liked how she seems to enjoy being alone and not in a relationship. There nothing wrong to be alone, and this book describes it well but destroys everything with a man, sadly. I'm not against it, but for me, Nina is definitely not in a place where she wants a boyfriend, which she said several times. The end part was also a bit disappointing. Suddenly, all of the problems are solved, which is really unrealistic. She changes for a man she just met because she feels good about him. Well okay, but when you have anxiety, changing your life for someone (especially when you are perfectly happy alone) seems a bit strange for me. Apart from that, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it!

Extension du domaine de la lutte by M. Houellebecq

I wanted to talk about this book because it was one of the worst I’ve read in a long time. I had to read that for uni – but in the end they changed it for another book, thanks for nothing – and it was a torture to read something so annoying for numerous reasons. I did not care about the writing, it was familiar and sometimes vulgar. This man is racist, hates women and probably himself. It’s like reading a book told by a man who is not part of his own life himself, like he is watching what is happening to him and is completely dead inside. I was so bored and so angry when I read it. Women are compared to animals or objects, he is completely racist towards people who are not like him and is completely obsess with sex. Oh and it's supposed to be about work, but that’s just a small part of it in the end. The only “good” thing is that this book talks about depression at works. That’s all.

Le quai de Ouistreham by F. Aubenas

Another book I had to read for uni, but this one was really good. On the subject of work again, this true story/documentary follows this French (bad ass) journalist who is going to go ‘undercover’ in the hard life of unemployment after the 2008 crisis in France. This book is so important, so real and interesting. She talks about her life during six months there, but she does not really talk about her. She tells everything on the same tone, with detachment. She doesn’t add any feelings really, she just tells what she lived for those six months, trying to find a job, working during crazy hours for little or no money. I’m sure this book can resonate not only in France, but with any country which had an impact with the 2008 crisis.

Have you read any of these books? What did you read in January?

Walk with me in Paris

Last week, after finishing my exam for the first semester, I unexpectedly had a week off. Because it is quite rare – and because the strike is mainly over now in Paris – I wanted to enjoy this week and discover Paris a bit more, especially in the places I love the most. So here is a little tour of the city.

Saint Germain

This was probably the area I wanted to see more as I don't go there really often. Yet, I think it's one of the prettiest place in Paris, especially during autumn with the beautiful colours of the tree, next to the white buildings. There, I could only see naked tree but with a bright blue sky during a very cold winter day. I got out of the metro at the “Pont Neuf” station and then I crossed the river to walk a bit along the Seine. I had to go at Gibert - this huge bookstore where you can find new and secondhand books – to find a book for uni, but really it was just an excuse to go into a bookstore. Then, I wandered around and took pictures of some of the very “trendy/instagrammable” places that I wanted to see in real life. It's always like a dream to see places in real life after seeing in on other's people account. I finished my walk by going to Île-Saint-Louis which is the little Island being Notre Dame. It was gorgeous with the winter sun and the white buildings, a bit like being on holidays. I just loved the view there.

Montmartre

The next day, I decided to go to Montmartre. Despite all of the opinion on this area, I don’t like it so much. The place is crowded even if the view is incredible. I’m always scared of pick-pocket, and you really have to get lost to find some really pretty places. And this time, I wanted to love the place and find some gem.

I went up (up up) and decided to walk around and, again, get lost. I finally found some pretty corners even though you really have to walk deeply in the area to find some quiet streets. This place is really crowded, loud and full of touristic “attractions”, which I don’t really like. I won’t say I love this area now, but every time I go there I find it more and more beautiful. And the view is probably one of the best you can have in Paris.

Along the Seine

Next stop: Eiffel Tower. The best view you can get in right at the Trocadero. Despite the crowd, I love going there, I always feel like a dreaming little girl watching this monument for the first time. It’s impressive. Then, I wanted to get a closer look, therefore I went to Rue de l’université to have this beautiful view between two buildings.
I wanted to walk along the Seine as it is so beautiful and probably my favourite thing to do. I took a few pictures on my view to the Louvres. I was lucky enough to have a beautiful shot without any cars in it!

And that’s it for this week. I’m discovering Paris every day and I love it more and more. It is gorgeous everywhere (mostly) and there are so many atmosphere in this city. But now, tell me: what do you like the most in Paris? And if you’ve never been there, would you like to visit the city?

Book vs. Kindle

No, I am not going to say which one is the best because they both are amazing and convenient for different reasons. But I have owned a kindle for a year now (bless you Santa), and I thought it could be interesting to give you my opinion on this amazing technology. I figured that a lot of people are thinking of buying one, and I’m sure this type of post could be useful for someone someday.

Kindle

If I managed to read that many books in 2019, it’s definitely because of it. The books are way cheaper and you have an immediate access to them, no need to wait for the postman anymore. It is really convenient for book storage: the number of books you can put in there is amazing. Having a really small device in your school/work bag is way lighter than a physical book. Plus, you can highlight your favourite parts without doing any damage to your book - people writing or doing anything on their book are devils to me, sorry. Reading as never felt so easy.

What about physical books?

Yet, before owning a kindle, I was sort of against it. I knew it could be convenient, but the feeling of the pages on your fingers, turning them, holding the book, all of that just disappear with a digital book. I was scared to miss that, but it’s actually perfectly fine. I still read physical books when I want to and I enjoy the “sensations” even more now. I don’t think they are better anymore, they are just different. But in the end, you still get to read a book.

I can’t tell you which one is better, but I would highly recommend investing in a kindle if you are thinking about it. If you are a big reader, it might be worth the price. And again, owning one does not mean saying goodbye to physical books for real. Plus, there is no such thing as “unreal” reading – physical, ebooks or audiobook are part of the reading process and are here to make us enjoy reading even more and also make our life easier. Keep in mind that reading should be fun!

How I get organized for the new year

One thing to know about me is that I am really organized. I just love planning on notebooks, writing stuff down so that I don’t forget about it, organizing the cupboards and anything in the house. I’m not a Marie Kondo – even though I hate keeping things with no purpose – but I sure like to organize things. I don’t think I’m too crazy about that, as I love being spontaneous, but I like to think it’s a quality. Therefore, I wanted to share some of my tips when you need to get a bit more organized for the new year to come.

Use a calendar

It may sounds simple, but a calendar is the best way to not forget things. Keep it simple for the main things (birthday, events, and appointments), it could save you a lot of time. You can put it on your wall so that it catches your eyes, or you can use any apps on your phone. I personally use the Google calendar app and it’s so simple and easy. It’s also a great tool for planning your weekends of evenings.

Try a bullet journal

Well, this is probably one of the best invention for people who like to take time to write stuff down. It’s not for everyone, and you really have to make time for it. You have so many possibilities now: the one already done for you, or the completely blank one. It’s your choice if you want to keep it minimal or if you want to get creative. But at the end of the day, it’s the best way to track things down, to write list and not forget anything.

Actually use the tools offer to you

If it’s a calendar, an app, a journal, anything: if you want to, use them. I would advise you to keep everything in one place if you tend to write things down everywhere. Or if you are a bit more organized, you can have a color code or even a journal for all of the things you want (a reading journal or a bullet journal for uni for example).

In the end, the possibilities are endless, you just have to find what works best for you. I personally love having one journal for everything – as my love for them as no boundaries. But tell me, what system do you use and how does it work for you?
