About me

Hi

I'mEva Marie

French student and blogger

Welcome to my blog, where I love to write about anything that comes to my mind, with no taboo. I’m 24, I’ve got freckles (you get it now) and I’m a grumpy French, sometimes, who writes in English. I love books, cats, le barbu, pizzas and Dicaprio. Besides that, there is not much that you need to know about me. Except that his blog has seen is first day back in 2017, and I'm proud that I manage to keep it that long.

How I get organized for the new year

One thing to know about me is that I am really organized. I just love planning on notebooks, writing stuff down so that I don’t forget about it, organizing the cupboards and anything in the house. I’m not a Marie Kondo – even though I hate keeping things with no purpose – but I sure like to organize things. I don’t think I’m too crazy about that, as I love being spontaneous, but I like to think it’s a quality. Therefore, I wanted to share some of my tips when you need to get a bit more organized for the new year to come.

Use a calendar

It may sounds simple, but a calendar is the best way to not forget things. Keep it simple for the main things (birthday, events, and appointments), it could save you a lot of time. You can put it on your wall so that it catches your eyes, or you can use any apps on your phone. I personally use the Google calendar app and it’s so simple and easy. It’s also a great tool for planning your weekends of evenings.

Try a bullet journal

Well, this is probably one of the best invention for people who like to take time to write stuff down. It’s not for everyone, and you really have to make time for it. You have so many possibilities now: the one already done for you, or the completely blank one. It’s your choice if you want to keep it minimal or if you want to get creative. But at the end of the day, it’s the best way to track things down, to write list and not forget anything.

Actually use the tools offer to you

If it’s a calendar, an app, a journal, anything: if you want to, use them. I would advise you to keep everything in one place if you tend to write things down everywhere. Or if you are a bit more organized, you can have a color code or even a journal for all of the things you want (a reading journal or a bullet journal for uni for example).

In the end, the possibilities are endless, you just have to find what works best for you. I personally love having one journal for everything – as my love for them as no boundaries. But tell me, what system do you use and how does it work for you?

I'm not shy, I'm quiet

I read that in someone’s bio the other day and I thought it was brilliant. It pointed a finger on something simple but also something that many people struggle to understand or even notice. Being quiet does not mean that you are shy. But, why do people always put them in the same box?

I’ve read or heard many things about being shy, introverted, calm, quiet… you name it! They all seem to work together even though every person is unique and different. But, they are all put in this negative box that people create. If you are just one of this thing, well too bad for you, you are on the wrong side, right? I felt that when I read one of those self-help books telling you that being an introvert is not that bad, but still making you feel like you are on the wrong side because being an extrovert is better… Here, 15 good things about not being the centre of attention. Bullshits.

I talk about this quite often here, but it’s something I’m always working on. I consider myself as an introvert and calm person. I’d rather listen and talk when I have something good to say rather than forcing myself to talk just for the sake of it. I prefer a small number of people around me, otherwise I’m quite mentally and physically drained. And for a long time, I thought I was wrong. But actually, who cares? Really, who cares that you are more calm and quiet than other? Who is really noticing it and has a problem with it? Probably only you if it’s the only thing that you see. People are just going to understand that you are that way and are totally accepting it, and if they don’t, well move around. There’s plenty of people to meet. But accepting ourselves takes a very long time, until you found the right people to tell you that it’s okay and that you are not alone. Everyone is different.

Another thing is that I’ve always considered myself as shy. I was a very shy child, not talking very much. I could be very outgoing with people close to me, and I still can be like that, but I was very shy. And I still thought I was shy, until I talk about it a bit with my boyfriend. He is possibly the person that knows me the best, and he just told me that I was not shy. What a shock for me it made. I was not actually shy anymore, I am more of a reserved one.

I remember the very moment I decided to stop being shy (yes, it started with a simple decision, very easy). I heard or read someone giving the best piece of advice I’ve ever had. It was very simple and probably obvious for some people, but for me it was life changing. Here it is: “When someone speaks to you or ask you a question, don’t just answer with one word (yes or no), give more details, and develop your answer even just a bit”. And let me tell you, it made a difference. I still have this in mind today when I’m with people I don’t really know and it works. It pushes you to talk, to go out of your comfort zone and makes you actually more interesting (I mean, let’s be honest, who wants to talk to someone with zero conversation and who has only “yes” and “no” words in their vocabulary?) so that people will make you talk more and more. Then, I made a few big jumps in my life that changed me and here I am. Not shy anymore? Well I don’t know. I feel quite comfortable when speaking to someone, I surely don’t like to be with plenty of people I don’t know, but I’m happy to talk to new people without having shaky hands or a very low voice.

Anyway, I only wanted to jump on this occasion to talk a bit more on this topic when I saw this person’s bio. You can be shy or quiet or reserved or anything, it doesn’t make you a bad person or less than someone else. Nobody would want a world with only loud and outgoing people, what good would that do? We are here, alive, with our own personalities; so let’s accept what we are instead of changing our personalities for the sake of other people who actually don’t care.

On journaling

The other day, I saw something that really annoyed me. This person was just mocking the whole process of having a personal diary, as if it was only a childish thing that we did when we were young. I was really angry because I felt personally offended as I always had a journal. Of course, this person surely did not mean any arm and definitely did not attack me, but still. I was pissed by this stupid reflection.

Journaling is becoming trendy now, and I think it’s cool. Especially for people like me who have always had a notebook, but were not confident enough to share the fact that they owned it. It was like reading back then, a really uncool thing to do (ah!). But now, people can share everything they want about their way of journaling. And I’m going to talk about mine today.

When I talk about journaling, for me, it simply means writing my thoughts on a journal. Nothing too crazy, I like to keep it simple. I experimented a lot, but now I found something that suits me well: a lined notebook where I write a page entirely whenever I want, mostly once a day. I don’t use many pens or draw inside (I can’t draw), I just write. I tried to be a more creative with other notebook, but I’m just really bad at it and the result never satisfied me. Now, having straight lines and everything pleasing for the eye is way easier for me. And the reason I write one entire page every time (despite for the aesthetic) is to force myself to go deeper in my thoughts, to write everything I have in mind, especially the things that bothered me or make me anxious. One page is enough, and I always feel a bit lighter when I close the notebook. Before this one, I had a dotted one with too much space and I ended up writing small amount of things every other day without being really deep. Therefore, it did not help me in any way. Because, this is the thing, it has to be therapeutic for me. I don’t write things down just for me to remember them, I write them down to feel better, to actually put words on how I feel. Sometimes, you have something in mind, but it’s only when you write it down that you can really put your finger on it and work on it.

I have been journaling, or keeping a diary (whatever you call it), since forever, really. My first journal had puppies on the cover with green pages and a key to open it. I loved it as it was a safe space for me, something private where I could write what I wanted (mostly who I was in love that day, the joy of being 8). Then, I kept asking my mom for new ones when I finished it. Until today. I kept most of them, mostly to remember where I’m from, what I’ve been through and to keep memories.

The whole process of journaling is so positive for me. Sometimes I can be quite scared to write down what’s wrong, but in the end, I know I will feel better after doing so. I understand the power of words on yourself, the power that your thoughts can have regarding self-reflection. And knowing all of that was probably why I was angry when hearing this person mocking journaling. Actually, this person did not know what they was talking about because journaling is something personal, private, intimate that you create. It gives you the opportunity to be free, creative, to put memories inside, to write about the good and the bad. It’s a personal space where you can feel safe. And it has been a great journey for me.

Do you keep a notebook with your thoughts? Or do you have something really personal and creative that makes you feel better ?

Plan with me - Décembre
